Washington is the capital of the United States of America. It is situated on the Potomac River in the District of Columbia. Washington is not the biggest city in the USA. It has a population of 900 000 people.
There are many historical places there. The Capitol is the largest and tallest among the buildings. The White House is the President's residence. It was built in 1799. The Washington Monument, which looks like a very big pencil, is situated next the Capitol.
Moreover, there are some other places of interest in Washington. For example, the Senate Chamber, the Statuary Hall, the Hall of Representatives, The Jefferson Memorial and the Library of Congress. The last one holds millions of books and manuscripts.
