Gregor - protagonist awakes to discover that he has transformed into a giant insect. He's slept and could not get out of bed for a long time.
The chief clerk from Gregor’s company arrives to berate Gregor and threatens to dismiss him. He wants to know why Gregor didn't catch the early train. Gregor scares him off by opening the door and showing his insect body.
Gregor’s father antagonizes him while his beloved sister tries to feed him and to remove his furniture from his room. Gregor’s mother is a passive, weak character who begs her husband to spare Gregor’s life.
Gregor suffers from isolation, hunger, and pain. The family decides to be rid of him.
Gregor dies sacrificially, enabling the family to experience undisguised relief and to move on with their lives.
