На сенатской площади стоит памятник Петру Первому- Медный всадник. Это гигантская конная статуя, правда сделана она не из меди, а из бронзы. Петр Великий гордо сидит верхом на прекрасном коне. За плечами развевается плащ, на голове у него лавровый венок победителя. Правая рука поднята и направлена в сторону Невы, левая крепко сжимает поводья. Под копытами коня извивается змея - символ побежденных врагов России.
Создал памятник скульптор Этьен Фальконе, по приказу Екатерины Второй. Эту работу он выполнял 12 лет, а помогала ему ученица Мари Анн Коло, она создала голову скульптуры.
Долго искали камень для пьедестала. Нашли на берегу финского залива огромный кусок серого гранита. Он получил название Гром- камень. Перевозили его сотни людей.
Впервые этот памятник назвал "Медный всадник" А.С.Пушкин в своей поэме.
