This memorial, the work of early nomad's culture, is found on the upper reaches of the Ili River. The burial mound offers a panoramic view stretching from the right (northern) bank of the river to the Alatau ridges in the distance. The city has 18 burial mounds with diameters from 8 to 70 meters and heights from 2 to 20 meters. All the burial mounds are of the same type. Five kilometers west of this burial mound another archaeological site is located. This site consists of a series of 45 stone fenceposts snaking northward for about half a kilometer. On some of its stones and plates images of mountain goats and wild boars are engraved. Bes Shatyr Burial Mound is included into the Ili Alatau National Park.
