Snowdonia is a region in North Wales, where there is a national Park with an area of 2170 km2. The reserve was established in 1951 and became one of the first three national parks of England and Wales, along with the Brecon-Beacons and the Pembrokeshire coast.

The English name of the area derives from Snowdon mountain, the highest point in Wales (1085 m). The Welsh name Eryri originally meant "lofty, mountainous terrain" and has no relation to the word eryr 'eagle' (in modern Welsh eryr, means "pebble"
In the Middle ages the rulers of the Kingdom of Gwynedd bore the title of "princes and lords Aberfraw of Snowdonia" (Tywysog Aberffraw ac Arglwydd Eryri).

Today the word "Snowdonia" denotes the entire national Park, but originally it was applied only t
