The next day sir Henry alone sent on a visit to Stapleton, and Holmes, Watson and arrivals from London detective Lestrade, hiding, waiting in the swamps near his home. Plans Holmes nearly hit crawling from the swamp fog. Sir Henry away from her brother and sent home. Stapleton admits he traces a dog: a huge, black, with a burning mouth and eyes. Holmes manages to shoot the dog, but sir Henry had a nervous breakdown. Holmes finds the wife of Stapleton tied up in the back room — she refused to help her husband in the hunt for sir Henry. She escorted the detectives into the mire, where Stapleton hid the dog, but no trace of him could be found. Most likely it sank in the swamp.
