Every year the British Post Office gets thousands of letters addressed to “Father Christmas, North Pole”. No need to tell you whom they are from and what they are about. The thing is: what does the Post Office do with them? They send the letters addressed to Father Christmas at the North Pole (or Greenland) to Copenhagen, and the letters addressed to him at Lapland go to Olso. In these two cities there are special centers that read the children’s letters from many countries of the world and send replies. The child who has sent his letter to Lapland gets in reply a postcard with a picture of Father Christmas walking through the snow, and reading: “Dear friend, Thank you for your nice letter.... I wish you a happy Christmas.... Love from Father Christmas” Those children whose letters go to Copenhagen get a picture, a book of tales, and a few words from Father Christmas. The whole thing started one day in 1949 when a secretary in the Greenland Department of the Danish Civil Service read a child’s letter to Father Christmas in Greenland which – no one knows how – found its way to her desk in Copenhagen. The letter pleased her so much that she sat down and wrote a reply which still goes out in its thousands from Copenhagen. The letters the children write are much alike. But one nine-year-old boy from Southampton decided that asking Father Christmas for presents without promising to give him something was not clever, so he wrote: “There will be a surprise for you at the foot of my bed”.
