Барбара Макклинток родилась 16 июня 1902 года. Умерла она 2 сентября 1992 года.Самое крупное её открытие - открытие мобильного элемента генома. Спустя 30 лет Мак-Клинток получила за него Нобелевскую премию.
За свои открытия Барбара получила множество наград и премий, но как и многие женщины-ученые прошлого века столкнулась с беспощадной дискриминацией. Мак-Клинток не могла занимать высокие должности в научных учреждениях. Даже в период расцвета своей научной карьеры она так и работала скромным инструктором при практикуме для студентов. Она очень долгое время была без работы.
