John
and his wife, Angela, are fond of (travelling) and usually they (go) abroad
for their holidays. Some time ago they (went) to a small town in
Yugoslavia. They also (spent) a very exciting holiday in Italy last
year. They (caught) a plane from London to Paris, then they travelled by
train to Istambul. The train (was moving) very slowly through the mountains in
Northern Italy. John and Angela (were having dinner) in the dining-car when
the train (stopped) suddenly. They (looked) out of the window. It (was getting) dark,
but they (noticed) quite a lot of men in green (getting on) the train. One
of them (was speaking) angrily. John (thouht) he (saw) fire-arms, but it
(had become) too dark to be sure. A few minutes later the dining-car (was) full of men in green. They (were asking)
everybody for their passports and (looking) at them hurriedly. Angela
decided that the men (were) police or immigration officials. A man, who
(was sitting) quietly at their desk, (looked) very excited. One of the men in
green (came up) to the man. But before he (asked) for his passport, the
man (jumped) from the seat (pushed) the nearest man hard, and (tried) to get
out of the window — but it was too small. Other officials (seized) the
man and (took) him away. One of them (explained) that the Italian police
(expected) them (to arrest) the robber because he (had stolen) three paintings
from the Uffizzi Gallery in Florence several weeks before.
