was born in Paris. He studied law and graduated in 1889. He worked as a court reporter, theatre critic and journalist. In 1905, he reported on the Russian Revolution. He began writing fiction in 1907. Leroux is best known for The Phantom of the Opera (1910 . The novel was translated into English in 1911 and has been made into several films since then. The story is about Erik, a ruined genius who terrorises a Paris opera house by pretending to be a ghost.
