first view of the city is a sight that can never be forgotten – you pass by
Liberty Island with the bronze Statue of Liberty, presented to the United
States by France in 1886 (to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of American
independence). The statue is 152 feet (about 50 metres) high and stands on a
pedestal of almost the same height. Its torch towers about 200 feet (60 meters)
above the harbor and can be seen at night for many miles. A new American Museum
of Immigration is opened at the base of the statue.
