The official cause of the war was the violation of the conditions of the Peace of Tilsit by Russia and France. Russia, despite the blockade of England, took its ships under its neutral flags in its ports. France, however, annexed the duchy of Oldenburg to its possessions. Napoleon considered insulting the demand of Emperor Alexander for the withdrawal of troops from the duchy of Warsaw and Prussia. The war of 1812 became inevitable.
