Eton is one of the oldest and
best-known public schools for boys, at the town of Eton, near Windsor, on the
river Thames. Its students are largely from aristocratic and upper-class
families.
The school was founded in 1440 by King Henry VI. There are 1,300 students
there. Boys usually stay at Eton for five years (between the age of 13 and 18).
Eton is a full boarding school, which means all pupils live at the
school. Tuition price is 24,490 pounds or $50,000 per year. Some students do
not pay for education, because they are King's Scholars. King's Scholars can
use the letters "KS" after their names.
The school is known for its
traditions, including a uniform of black tailcoat and waistcoat and pinstriped
trousers. Most pupils wear a white tie.
Until the last century Eton was
known for its use of corporal punishment. In the 16th century, Friday was
called "flogging day". It was finished only in the 1980s.
Eton provides fine teaching
facilities in science, In language, computing and design. A long time ago boys
studied Latin, prayers and devotion. From the 19th century this curriculum has
changed much for example, there are now
more than 150 students of Chinese, 70-Japanese, 50- Arabic, which are
optional subjects. Nowadays Eton is equipped with modern standards of the XXI
century. Departments of Physics, Chemistry and Biology have quality experiment
equipment. In the center of design and technology students construct new models
of racing cars. European languages are compulsory, there is also the Department
of Russian Language and Literature.
The boys
are offered a very wide range of opportunities for spare time activities: art,
sculpture, woodwork, metalwork, and silver work. Besides almost any musical
instruments can be learnt. There are also fifty societies run the boys
themselves.
