The length of the Krasnoyarsk region from the north to the mountains of the Southern Siberia is about 3000 km. In the north, the region is washed by two seas of the Arctic Ocean, the Kara Sea and the Laptev Sea. It spreads to the southern sides of the Altay-Sayan highlands and takes the central geographical position in the Russian Federation. Cape Chelyuskin, located on the territory of the region, is the northernmost point of the mainland of Russia and Asia. On the territory of the region, there are three climatic zones: arctic, sub-arctic and temperate. The climate is characterized by strong temperature fluctuations during the year. Winters are long and summers are short there. The average temperature in January is -36°C in the north and -18°C in the south, in July it varies from 13 to 20°C respectively. Permafrost is widespread, especially in the north.More than 2000 historical and cultural landmarks, including the archeological heritage sites, are located on the territory of Krasnoyarsk region. The Putorana Plateau, which is situated above the Arctic Circle, is included into the List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Russia as a phenomenon of extreme natural beauty. There are also such natural parks as Krasnoyarsk Stolby Natural Reserve near Krasnoyarsk city, Taimyr Reserve on the Taimyr Peninsula, Tunguska Reserve and Bolhoy Arctic Nature Reserve. The main rivers of the area are Yenisei, Angara, Nizhnyaya Tunguska, Khatanga, Pyasina and Podkamennaya Tunguska. The Yenisei River crosses the territory from the South to the North. It is one of the largest rivers in the world. There are about 323 000 lakes and most of them are located in the Arctic Circle. Lake Taimyr is the largest one in the region.
