The invention of the printing press in the 15th century changed the world as much as the introduction of the television or the Internet in the 20th century. In 1476 a printing press was brought to London. It was the idea of William Caxton (1422-1491), an English merchant, diplomat, writer and printer. His aim was to produce books in English for the sale to the nobility. Many books were published in Latin. He also printed the Bible in English. Te first book for pleasant reading was an edition of Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, as well as stories about King Arthur, Troy and Aesop’s fables, which he translated himself. One of the first difficulties Caxton faced was the difference between spoken and written English. Besides, there were too many French words in the English language. What is more, there were various dialects of English. So, starting to print books, Caxton had to standardize spelling of English in the printed books. His choice became the standard of the English language. In 2002 William Caxton was named among the Greatest Britons in a BBC poll.
