SURPRISED! 1. Surprised! was painted by Henry Rousseau in 1891. It is an oil painting and it shows a landscape with a tropical storm. the composition includes a fierce tiger in the foreground and in the background there are flashes of lighting. It is said that a visit to the botanical gardens in Paris inspired Rousseau to pain this picture. He never travelled to distant lands and never saw a real jungle.
