The Isle of Man is a small island lying between the islands of Great Britain and Ireland. Although it is a part of the UK, it mainly rules itself. The UK can apply specific laws to the island, but this doesn't happen often, and the island is basically responsible for creating its own laws. The UK, however, is responsible for protecting it in times of war. B. People who travel to the Isle of Man by plane can see an unusual statue as they leave the airport. It is three legs spread out like the spokes of a wheel and joined together at the centre. As the saying goes, whichever way you throw it, it will stand. It represents the Isle of Man, and the image appears on the island s flag and money. C. There are companies on the Isle of Man interested in taking people to the Moon. In 2012, one of those companies announced plans to do so in a few years. The cost of one flight would be around 65 million, which would be paid for by the individual. There are at least two dozen people interested in these flights. D. The Isle of Man is about 50 kilometres long and 20 kilometres wide. There are hills in the north and south parts of the island, and the central area is a valley. The highest point, in the north, is Snaefell, which is around 600 metres high. From here, you can see all the territories of the UK - Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. E. Centuries ago, the Isle of Man was part of the Kingdom of the Isles. This area consisted of islands near western Scotland as well as the Isle of Man. The kingdom lasted for around 400 years and ended in the 13th century. Afterwards, the Isle of Man became part of Scotland, then eventually England, and is now closely linked to the UK. F. The Isle of Man is home to the Manx cat. This cat is unique because it has a very short tail, or no tail at all. The island is also the home of the Manx Loaghtan sheep. It's dark brown and has four (or sometimes even six) horns. The horns that grow upwards and outwards can reach around a metre in length. G. Because the Isle of Man is in the middle of the Irish Sea, it receives plenty of rainfall from storms that approach from the south-west. Temperatures throughout the year do not vary greatly, and as a result, it has mild winters and cool summers. The highest recorded temperature on the island is 28.9 C.
