Образец; "I can't swim very well", I said ("Я не умею хорошо плавать", - сказал я. В косвенной речи мы должны использовать прошедшую форму модального глагола could, т.к слова автора в прошедшем времени. I said that I couldn't swim well. Помним, что при переводе происходит сдвиг по времени назад.
