"The Unequal Marriage" - a picture Russian painter Vasily Pukirev.

The Unequal Marriage(1862), is a painting depicting the wedding ceremony of an elderly, high-ranking official and a young, unhappy girl. This was one of the celebrated denunciatory pictures of the 1860s, revealing the unequal position of women and the corruption of bureaucracy. This critical mode, reflecting the general striving for reform in Russia after the Emancipation reform of 1861.

The painting shows the wedding process in the Orthodox Church. On the background of the gloom of the church, falling out of the window light illuminates only the groom, bride and the priest. Groom was depicted an old man in a nice suit, leaning on a cane with his right hand, with condescending, irritable expression.

The figure shows a priest in chasuble hunched, looking sullenly with a look in his left hand church book, and the right holds a golden ring that he was going to put on the bride's finger.

The figure of best man among the guest. Expression is on his face expresses dissatisfaction, hands folded on his chest.
There is a feeling of pity for the bride, when you look at this picture. Poor girl barely worth live. Her eyes began to cry.

Painting made a huge impression on his contemporaries on exhibition. Stasov believed that Pukirev was created one of the most tragic pictures.
