ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- A loud noise woke Arden, N.C., resident Doreen Campbell around 3:15 a.m. Thursday.
"I looked through my window and there was a tree laying on the power lines," Campbell said. The tree knocked out power to her neighborhood, but she was thankful that Duke Energy workers were quickly on the scene to restore it.
The furious winter storm that has left hundreds of thousands in the South without power was roaring up the East Coast on Thursday. At least 12 deaths across the South were blamed on the weather, and a snowy Thursday was forecast from the Carolinas to Maine.
More than 100 million Americans were under some form of a winter storm warning, watch, or advisory, the National Weather Service said.
