Whose hands are beautiful?
Three rich women sat by
the river every day. They did not work, they only talked all day long.
One day one of the women said:
“Look how white and beautiful my
hands are.”
Another of three women said: “My
hands are more beautiful.”
Her friend said: “No, my hands are
more beautiful.”
А poor woman saw the women by the
river and went up to them.
“Dear women,” she said, “I’m very
old and I can’t work. I’m hungry. Please, give me some bread.”
The rich women did not give her any
bread. But one of them said to her:
“Old woman, look at our hands.
Whose hands are more beautiful?”
The old woman looked at their hands but did not answer them. She
went away.
In another place by the river there
was a young woman. She was poor, and she worked day and night. The old
woman came up to her and said:
“I’m old and hungry. I can’t work.
Can you give me some bread?”
The young woman opened her bag, took
out her bread and gave it to the old woman.
The old woman took the young woman
by the hand.
“Come with me,” she said, and they
went to the three rich women.
“Now I can tell you whose hands are
more beautiful,” she said, “Look at the hands of this poor woman. They work day
and night. Your white hands do not know work. Her hands are more beautiful,
because they give us bread.”
