My favourite book is "1984" by George Orwell. It is a distopian novel.
We can only guess that the action starts in year 1984, but an interesting thing is that it was published in 1948, so we can see that two last numbers were shifted.
The protagonist is Winston Smith, who finds courage to approve, that he hates Big Brother, the dictator. Later, he fells in love with Julia and they decide to somehow protest against regime. So they go to O'Brien, who is the member of Inner Party and he get them acquainted with the existense of Brotherhood, the forbidden underground organization that does not accept the regime of Big Brother. However, finally it appears that they've been tricked by O'Brien and taken to prison. They are tortured there and made to bertray each other.
I liked this book very much and I would advise to read it because it describes perfectly to what degree can dictatorship lead if it takes place in nowadays society. Thus, it can explain the mechanism how totalitarian system works and make the tendencies of modern society clearer.
