Have you ever seen a star fall? We call these “falling
stars”, but they are not really stars.
They are meteorites. A meteorite is a rock from space. Many meteorites come to
Earth from an area in space between Mars and Jupiter. This area in space has a
lot of rocks. Thousands of meteorites come to Earth every year. Most meteorites
land in the ocean or in empty places. The larges meteorite fell in Siberia in
1908. It destroyed a forest.

Many meteorites fall in Antarctica or in the Arctic.
On the ice, it is easier for scientists to find the meteorites. In January
2000, a meteorite fell in Northern Canada. It broke into many pieces. A local
man found some pieces on the ice. He carefully collected some. Then he called
scientists for help. The scientists found more than 500 pieces of the
meteorite.

The scientists are very excited about this meteorite.
It is very unusual. It’s very old and breaks very easily. With this meteorite,
scientists can learn about space and about Earth’s history. It is a shooting
star with a story to tell!
