I (entered) the dentist's waiting room
which (was) full. Like any other waiting room, it (had) an atmosphere of its
own. A small table (was covered) with very old magazines; the curtains (were)
of indefinite colour and the armchairs definitely unclean. There (were) dusty
pictures on the wall. I (took) my seat and (decided) to pass the time watching
the people around me.
A little man beside me (was turning) over the pages of a magazine quickly and
nervously. It (was) hard to understand what he (was looking) at; from time to
time he (threw) the magazine on the table and (picked up) another. Opposite me
there (was) a young mother who (was trying) hard to quiet her son. The boy (made)
aeroplane noises as he (was moving) an ashtray on the floor. Near him an old
man (was sleeping) and the boy's mother (was) afraid that sooner or later her
son (would wake) him up. I myself (was) sleepy. The boy (was) quiet now in his
mother's arms. There (was) a deathly silence in the room and just at this
moment the loud speaker (called) out the name of the next lucky person.
