The Crown Prosecution Service. The prosecution of offenders in England and Wales is, primarily, the responsibility of the Crown Prosecution Service, an organization independent of and separate from, the police. The service is headed by the Director of Public Prosecutions. It employs nearly 2,000 lawyers and operates from a Headquarters office in London and 13 Area offices in England and Wales, each of these supervised by a Chief Crown Prosecutor. Some offences are prosecuted by other government or public agencies such as the Inland Revenue and the national Serious Fraud Office. The Crown Prosecution Service may vary or withdraw a charge preferred against a defendant by police.
In Northern Ireland the prosecution of minor offences in the Magistrates’ Courts continues to be undertaken by police officers. Serious cases and cases to be heard in the Crown Court are referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions for nomination of solicitor and counsel to prosecute.
