On the eastern bank there is a big and modern Pest, the business and shopping centre. There are good theatres, restaurants, bars and shops.
Six bridges join Buda and Pest. For nearly a thousand years Buda and Pest were two towns. Then in 1873 they joined and became one city. Until 1939 Budapest was one of the most important cultural capitals of Europe.
The public transport system is one of the best and cheapest in the world.
